What Happens to Identity When the Hard Part Gets Easy?
We tend to become the things we struggle through. The years spent learning something hard don't just give you a skill, they shape how you see yourself. The difficulty is part of the identity. Being able to do what others can't quietly becomes who you are.
So when the hard part gets easy, it isn't just a skill that loses value. It's a piece of the self. The work still gets done, but the thing you measured yourself against has gone, and there's a strange grief in that. Not for the effort itself, but for the version of you that effort made.
Maybe the hard part was never the point, just the most visible proof that you cared. Strip it away and what's left is quieter: what you notice, what you choose, what you refuse to settle for. Harder to point at, and harder to be proud of.
Which might be the real question. Not what we can do, but who we are when doing it no longer sets us apart.
